Dan Stiles is an illustrator and designer based in Portland, Oregon
Over the past twenty years, Dan has collaborated with everyone from indie bands to major corporations in creating posters, identities, advertising, custom packaging, and limited edition collectable art and merchandise. His clients range from Arctic Monkeys, Sonic Youth, and Wilco to the X Games, IBM, and Nickelodeon. He draws from a broad swath of influences including skateboard graphics, album covers, modern art, children’s books, comics, psychedelia, and vintage advertising. Dan has published several children’s books as well as a monograph of his work entitled One Thing Leads to Another. He lives with his wife and daughters in Portland, Oregon.
JAY MICHAEL
The Freehand Art of Jay Michael is boundless, exploring the possibilities in every subject. With an original interpretation that always stimulates and holds the viewer, from the black and white renderings and portraits, to the full out explosion of rock and roll color and imagery, Jay Michael delivers a style that is conscious of the past, with a flare for the future. His technique and skill give him a professional edge that never lets down and gives style to every subject.
Born in Stillwater, Oklahoma, Michael moved at an early age to Baton Rouge with his mother to live with his grandmother. The two women, along with his aunt, were Michael’s first introduction to art. As painters they taught him technique and color use, though they never forced any type of practice on him. Michael was drawn to art and pursued it as a hobby, but never had any formal training beyond a few high school art classes.
Jay pulls inspiration from – Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead, Hendrix, Bob Marley – there isn’t much disconnect from the psychedelic-style art Michael creates through Fly Right Studios in 1992, but things didn’t start taking off until 1998 when he got his first real gigs.
Since then, Michael has created poster art for venues like House of Blues, Tipitina’s, Howlin’ Wolf, Chelsea’s; worked with members of The Allman Brothers Band, Black Crowes and Steppenwolf; and also produced the chalk art for the Varsity and Chimes since 2001. He has also become friends with Jimi Hendrix’s brother and niece, and is now in talks to create art for Hendrix’s birthday celebration.
Specializing in concert, festival and band posters, Michael’s artwork is a call back to the colorful, swirling psychedelic concert posters of the ‘60s and ‘70s. With powerful, bright colors and bold shapes, Michael tries to elicit an emotion with his art, much like the connection one feels to music.
BOB MASSE
Artist Biography by Jason Ankeny
Canada's foremost vintage rock concert poster artist, Bob Masse absorbed the influence of the psychedelic era to create eye-popping yet elegantly stylized art nouveau wall art designs distinguished by their fluid linework and intricate figures. A native of Burnaby, British Columbia, he began drawing as a child, regularly competing against his cousin to determine who could sketch the most images of Bugs Bunny; Mad magazine was also a profound influence, and he copied each new issue from start to finish. As a teen, Masse earned spending money during the holidays by creating cardboard Santas and decorating windows for his neighbors; he later painted pinstripes and flames on cars, even producing Big Daddy Roth-styled monster T-shirts for his school friends.
After graduation, Masse went on to attend art school in Vancouver; a fixture at local coffeehouses, he was eventually tapped to illustrate posters advertising upcoming folk music performances, among them a date by a then unknown Bob Dylan (whose name Masse accidentally misspelled "Dylon"). With the rise of folk-rock, Vancouver played host to concerts from the Grateful Dead, the Jefferson Airplane, and the Steve Miller Band, Janis Joplin, Stevie Nicks, Bob Marley with Masse contributing increasingly psychedelicized artwork for their appearances; in 1966, he traveled to San Francisco, with a revelatory journey to the Haight-Ashbury district as well as direct contact with the poster art of the Fillmore and the Family Dog exerting a profound influence on his own subsequent work.
Returning to Vancouver, Masse befriended the local band the Collectors, and when they traveled to Los Angeles to make a record he followed, spending the final years of the 1960s living in the Laurel Canyon area and hanging out with the Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother & the Holding Company, and Taj Mahal. As 1969 drew to a close he went back to Vancouver, producing a series of posters for local venues including the Retinal Circus, Moose Valley Farms, and Gassy Jack's; as the 1970s dawned, he turned to commercial work, illustrating for McDonalds, the Expo Space Station, CP Air, and countless others. Masse additionally designed numerous business logos, among them a ubiquitous orange-furred fox for radio station C-FOX that is among his most long-lived and enduring creations.
During the 1980s, Masse's focus turned to Hollywood, as he created posters for smash films including Total Recall and Back to the Future III; he also worked on the television series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. As rock concert art began to enjoy a surge in popularity during the following decade, however, Masse returned to the medium with renewed force, producing a steady stream of posters for the first time since the 1970s. Creating lush visuals that incorporated the psychedelic spirit of his previous work while at the same capturing the essence of his contemporary subjects, Masse produced memorably beautiful posters advertising appearances by latter-day stars including the Smashing Pumpkins, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tori Amos, and Alanis Morissette.
DARREN GREALISH
Darren Grealish is a rock concert poster artist based out of San Diego, California. Darren creates his brand of art based on his life experiences with relationships, travel, people and pop culture. Darren is an award-winning San Diego based Pop artist specializing in concert posters, album cover art graphic Design and illustration. Both psychedelic and surreal, his work is a direct lineage of the iconic rock poster art of the 60s and 70s and has been asked to include his art catalog into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame archives for perpetuity. Working mostly exclusively by hand, he creates phantasmagorical scenes and images evocative of a fever pitch dream. These surrealistic images have made him one of the most in-demand concert poster artists in the industry today.
Darren exhibits his art in galleries and conventions all around the world and his distinct style has caught the attention of collectors and museums alike. He’s been commissioned by a veritable who’s who in the music industry including such acclaimed acts as Beck, David Bowie, Ty Segall, The Stooges, The White Stripes, Dead Meadow, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Swerverdriver, Lemonheads, Primal Scream, MC5, Luna, They might be giants, Nick Cave, Spoon, Motorhead, Radiohead, PJ Harvey, Oasis, Allah-las, Modest Mouse, The Black Angels and The Killers to name but a few.
Darren's wall art designs have been published in several books including “The Stooges: The Authorized and Illustrated Story by Robert Matheu and magazines and has done work for, or his work has appeared in, SPIN Magazine, 944 Magazine, Apple Computers (Nano Campaign), the Fox television show The OC, Zeke and Luther (Disney Channel), Veronica Mars, and the films Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, Black Christmas and Definitely Maybe. The influence of artist Alphonse Mucha can be seen in many of his images and Darren cites artists such as Andy Warhol, Mad Marc Rude, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Gary Grimshaw, Martin Sharp and the Dutch design collective “The Fool” as early influences as well as film makers Pedro Almodovar, David Lynch, Kenneth Anger and Stanley Kubrick.
